70-min drive each way via I-5 South. Tacoma Narrows Bridge is the scenic moment. Here's the full plan.
Driving directions from Seattle
Take I-5 South for ~30 min, then WA-16 West across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Total: 70-90 min depending on traffic. Skip rush hour both directions.
- Best departure: 9:00 AM on a weekday, 8:00 AM on a weekend
- Best return: 6:30 PM (after rush hour, before bridge backup)
- Tacoma Narrows Bridge toll: $7.00 northbound (return). Pre-pay with Good To Go pass to skip the toll booth ($5.50 with pass).
Where to park
Park free at Skansie Brothers Park (3211 Harborview Dr). 70+ free spots, walk to everything from there. If full, the marina lot at 8809 N Harborview Dr is also free.
The 8-hour plan
Follow our standard Gig Harbor day-trip itinerary with a 10:30 AM arrival. If you want to make a full day of it, add these Seattle-specific stops:
- 9:30 AM — Stop at Tacoma Narrows Bridge Park (eastbound side) for the photo. Free parking, 5 min stop.
- 4:00 PM — On the way back, stop at Point Defiance Park in Tacoma (5400 N Pearl St) for a sunset walk through the Rose Garden. 30-min detour.
- 5:30 PM — Optional dinner at Silver Cloud Hotel Tacoma at Point Ruston Waterfront en route back to Seattle.
What to bring
- Cash for Tides Tavern (cash bar) and the gondola tip
- Discover Pass ($10 day, $30 annual) only if you plan to visit Kopachuck State Park
- Layers — the harbor is 5-10°F cooler than Seattle, even in summer
- Polarized sunglasses if you want clear water photos
The mistake to avoid
Don't try to combine Gig Harbor with Mt Rainier National Park as a single day trip from Seattle — they're 90 min apart, and you'll spend the whole day driving. Pick one. (For Mt Rainier, do an overnight in Ashford or Packwood.)
Want to make it a weekend?
Stay at The Maritime Inn (4.8 ★, downtown waterfront, ~$200/night) or The Waterfront Inn (4.7 ★, slightly cheaper, ~$170/night). See the 2-day weekend itinerary for the full plan.
